Up to 600 new jobs to be created after Sussex life sciences hub receives planning permission
Up to 600 new jobs are set to be created after plans for a life sciences hub in Sussex have been given the go ahead, a news report can reveal.
The University of Sussex will now refurbish its existing Genome Centre and construct an 160,500 sq ft life sciences building. The majority of the new building, designed by Hawkins\Brown, will accommodate research laboratories, meeting and seminar spaces and offices for the life science department, along with a café area at ground floor level.
The four-storey facility will occupy a former car park and the new design aims to echo the university’s collection of listed buildings, dating from the 1960s and created by Sir Basil Spence.
The development’s Bio Innovation Centre, which would be housed in the life sciences building, was awarded £5.5m of government Local Growth Fund money earlier this month. The same fund gave the city council £12m towards a new £130m conference centre and arena building at Black Rock.
Councillor Julie Cattell said: "The Life Sciences department at Sussex has been responsible for pioneering research into diseases affecting all families such as dementia and cancer. So we’re really pleased to approve a modern new home for them which will become an asset to the city and to the country."
The jobs up for grabs over the next 12 months range from customer-facing roles to head office positions.
