The plans for the 17 houses, ten flats and a 4,682 sq ft restaurant for the South Quay in Hayle comes from Hayle Quays, with plans drawn up by P4 Planning.

 

The South Quay site itself is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The application was previously brought before the committee last year. However the decision as deferred to consult the World Heritage Site body and amend plans.

 

Once it emerged the World Heritage Centre and UNESCO teams would support the application, the plans were approved by officers.

 

The application’s design and access statement reads: " Since opening South Quay to the public for the first time ever in living memory, it has become a popular area of public realm that is enjoyed by many who walk daily around the newly repaired harbour walls. However, the raised platform remains undeveloped, waiting for these applications to be approved and implemented to complete the regeneration of this part of the harbour.

 

"Introducing a new signature restaurant within the scheme will ensure that South Quay becomes a tourist destination in its own right, bringing visitors to Hayle and increasing local expenditure.

 

"In addition, these new facilities will create important employment opportunities for local people. Based on the HCA Employment Density guide, we estimate that between 35 and 45 jobs could be created in the new restaurants in addition to the construction jobs resulting from the development itself and the wider supply chain opportunities that will arise from new businesses and housing in the town.
