Plans submitted for major mixed-use development in Herne Bay
Plans for a major mixed-use development including almost 1,000 new homes in the Kent seaside town of Herne Bay have been lodged with the local authority.
Canterbury City Council has received and validated a hybrid planning application for up to 955 new dwellings on land to the west of Sweechbridge Road, Hillborough.
The application, submitted by Pegasus Group on behalf of housebuilder Taylor Wimpey, is seeking detailed planning permission for the first 194 homes nd outline approval for the remaining 761 units.
The proposed development also includes more than 355,000 sq ft of employment floorspace, a two-form entry primary school, local shopping facilities, a community centre, car parking and large areas of open space.
The application site is located approximately 1.5 miles to the east of Herne Bay town centre, directly to the south of the local settlement areas known as Hillborough, Bishopstone and Beltinge. The Herne Bay coast lies about 800 metres to the north, separated from the site by residential development.
The proposed mixed-use scheme has been the subject of "extensive discussions" with Canterbury City Council and Kent County Council.
