Shopping centre revamp scheme receives planning permission

Plans to transform a West Sussex shopping centre into a new restaurant quarter have been approved recently by the local authority, a news report in the local business media has been able to find.

NewRiver Retail’s £15m proposal for the Montague Shopping Centre in Worthing is part of the company’s wider strategy to revitalise and improve its shopping centres through the introduction of increased food and beverage offers.

A new freestanding glazed kiosk, designed specifically for Patisserie Valerie, will be constructed, and several retail units will be changed from shops to restaurants and cafes.

In addition to the new restaurants, NewRiver plans to introduce an enhanced public realm with new paving, seating and landscaping.

Stuart Mitchell, director at NewRiver Retail, said: "We are delighted to have received planning permission to deliver this development, repositioning The Montague Centre into a high quality restaurant quarter which will feature top national restaurant operators revitalizing the town centre."

Kevin Jenkins, chair of Worthing Borough Council’s planning committee, added: "This is an exciting opportunity in the heart of Worthing. We appreciate hearing from everyone who took part in the consultation.

"From the evidence provided in this application, we feel that the benefits of the proposed scheme to Worthing outweigh the potential impacts. Our town centre will be enhanced by bringing units back into economical use and by creating a new restaurant destination, bringing significant investment to our town."
